It’s wonderful what artistic treasures can be born from a bit of a chat.
Produced by Moonji, this short film observing the people of Myanmar embarking on their morning commutes, is the fruit of a chinwag between visual artist Ayoto Ataraxia and avant-pop artist Thomas Azier, about Tsai Ming Liang’s trilogy, Rebels Of The Neon God, Vive L'Amour and The River, which explore unspoken longings and family dysfunction in 90s Taipei.
The director was moved to recall motorcycle rides with his father and, wanting to express “a desire for freedom within chaos”, came up with this mesmerising meditation on travelling that seems packed with yearning.
Previously known as Paul Jung, the director has worked as photographer and art director with top fashion brands, from i-D and Vogue to Comme des Garçons, before moving into music videos for artists including Estelle, Emily King and MeLo-X.
The work is a final taste of audio-visual loveliness that’s a teaser for the album Love, Disorderly, set for release on 12 June, see an earlier film teaser for the album directed by Laurent Chanez.
