“Good evening, good morning and good afternoon,” says a news anchor determined not to offend anyone on a different time zone.
As the absurd programme, titled Unbiased, continues Freedman, who wrote, directed and stars in the film, appears as a variety of broadcasters all intent on delivering ‘news’ that nobody can ever disagree with.
A political editor reports live from City Hall on the undeniable fact that the sky is currently dark and is located above the building. A weatherman attempts to give us the skinny on unreliable meteorological situations by reporting from the future.
Ultimately, the film is a droll satire on the difficulties of presenting the truth and the pitfalls of echo chambers.
Explaining his motivation, Freedman explains: "I’ve been feeling unable to enter the polarised landscape of people discussing the news, especially now. While I think it’s necessary to gain as much information as possible to paint a complete picture, I felt there were other tools I was lacking too; a deeper way of conversing and approaching people’s personal experiences, the tools of active listening, nuance and ability to hold multiple truths. I love the John Cleese quote where he says ‘Comedy is the fastest way to the open place’. So my attempt here is to use comedy as a tool; as a mirror so that we can begin some type of conversation."
