Directed by The Sacred Egg through Riff Raff, this atmospheric and enigmatic music video accompanies British electronic band Depeche Mode’s new track Wagging Tongue.
Through captivating, monochrome footage, the film tells the story of a couple experiencing relationship difficulties in a world where talking things through isn’t quite so simple.
As they communicate via chalkboard, it becomes apparent their conversation cannot be had aloud; speech now comes a cost. They must instead travel to a lake, where they pay a toll to submerge their heads in the dark, icy water - the only place they are allowed to express themselves freely.
After an intense and cleverly-crafted scene of underwater yelling, the couple return to their home in silence, leaving us intrigued as to what the fighting was all about.
“Making a video for a band like Depeche Mode is obviously an honour. It’s also a slightly daunting task, considering their music video heritage, but I’m proud of where we got to with Wagging Tongue” explained the director. "I think the idea developed into something interesting and I hope people interpret it in their own way.”
