Created by Havas London and choreographed by three-time Dancing on Ice winner Daniel Whiston, (who is also the show’s current Associate Creative Director), this year’s holiday campaign follows a family gliding through a series of magical Christmas moments, before reaching the big day itself.
Directed by Scott Lyon through Outsider, the ad Make Christmas Spectacular, starts inconspicuously enough as a family enter an Asda store. The first hint that there’s a spot of seasonal sorcery about comes when a troupe of Asda employees, trolleys and all, slide past in a suspiciously synchronised manner.
The mum looks down to find her shoes have transformed into a pair of sparkling ice skates, and, as the lights dim, the first strains of the Boléro – made world-famous by Torvill and Dean’s 1984 Winter Olympics routine – begin to play.
From then the store transforms into an ice rink as the family skate off into a wondrous fantasy of Christmas treats, gliding through various scenarios including: Asda employees dancing with fridges; a festive school play featuring a cute skating pudding, guests enjoying lavish festive food, and a family-filled Christmas Day, at which the young daughter treats everyone to a perfect ‘10’ pirouette.
It’s slick and joyous with topnotch post from Electric Theatre Collective and editing by Rich Orrick.
Vicki Maguire, Chief Creative Officer at Havas London, adds: “Given families were forced to put Christmas ‘on ice’ last year, we thought it was only right we did the same this time around – literally! We wanted to go big for our first Christmas spectacular with Asda – and you can’t get much bigger than Boléro, backspins and a giant chocolate bauble for dessert.”
