For those not in the know, reports about the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament might lead one to believe that some kind of space-time continuum error has occurred and we’re all heading back to the future, or forward to the past.

Fear not, it’s just another confusing footie fact, like the offside rule. The 2020 gig is just taking place in 2021. Simples. Further confusion reigns in this enjoyable spot created by Athens agency The Newtons Laboratory and directed by Vassilis Bourantas, through Boo productions.

Packed with action movie tropes, The Negotiator relates the story of a couple of chancers who break into the fictional European Championship museum on the very night the tournament is due to start, somehow not realising till too late that their crime caper might mean they miss the game.

It’s not overly clear what they plan to do, other than gawp at a match-predicting psychic octopus and lovingly sniff framed patches of pitch grass, but nonetheless a negotiator is dispatched to lure them from the museum with promises of betting fun and vegan pizzas.

It’s totally daft but well produced and very entertaining. It also stokes the excitement in the lead up to the Championship kick-off in Rome this Friday, 11 June, between Turkey and Italy.
