This series of ads for Wealthsimple, a wealth app aimed at Millenials, gives money management questions a bit of a twist.
Filing tax returns is top of literally nobody’s list of favorite things to do, and yet, when you’re technically undead...are you filing on behalf of a deceased person? Should you be filing as a dependent? Frankenstein’s monster contemplates existence, life, and death as he tries to figure out how to file. Noah (you know, the Biblical one,) tries to figure out if he incurred moving costs the past year. Medusa counts her serpentine dependents on her head.
The series is clever and silly, taking easily recognizable figures and turning them into ultra-relatable satires of tax season. Frankenstein features Carel Struycken, who played The Giant in the original Twin Peaks and Lurch in the Addams Family. Medusa stars Tynomi Banks, a drag queen who was a competitor on the inaugural season of Canada’s RuPaul’s Drag Race.
I’m always a fan of strange appearances and two-unlike-things meshing into a cohesive piece and seeing someone like Medusa struggle with her tax returns makes even the worst yearly chore seem a little less daunting. It's worth mentioning that these ads did run during the Super Bowl... just in Canada. The pieces were directed by Matthew Swanson and produced by Epoch Films. Swanson is repped by BOLD in the UK.
