Premiering on World Refugee Day at this year’s Cannes Lions, The Right to Race, was written and directed for ON by Bullock in collaboration with Hungry Man and poses important questions about identity, representation and belonging.

Focussing on the poignant relationship forged between the supremely gifted long-distance runner and his Swiss coach, Markus Hagmann, the thought-provoking 30-minute film follows Lobalu’s odyssey from a war-torn region in South Sudan, to joining the Athlete Refugee Team in Kenya in 2017.

In 2019, while representing the Team in Geneva, he fled from the hotel, carrying only the clothes on his back, and sought asylum in Switzerland. He is now fighting for the right to race and represent his new country on the global stage.

However, despite being an outstanding competitor challenging the world’s best – he is currently excluded from official refugee teams and will have to wait for up to ten years before being eligible for citizenship in Switzerland.
