Relying on an excellently weird horror aesthetic in the vein of Midsommar, Eleusis follows a pop star in rehab, trying to find his inspiration again.
From the beginning shot of a young man beating his hands against a piano’s keys, the film takes on an intensity and drama that feels extremely heightened. When the musician, Ivan, gets dropped off at a strange sanatorium, the style of the piece is taken to a different level, with beautifully cut clothing, a soft texture, and characters that contrast harshly against our main character. When the final carnal, brutal, bloody ritual is performed, we've been sucked into the cult of ELEUSIS, same as Ivan.
This descent into strange, symbolic madness was written and directed by Andzej Gavriss, who won an YDA last year for his similarly strange and fantastic promo, You’re Born. No horror film is complete without stellar post-production work, and Eleusis was edited by David Gesslbauer, with color design by Matt Osborne and sound design by Julian Holzapfel.
