Detailing the difference a happy home can make, Survivor's sharp direction from Birth's Ben Lacour and troubling tale squeezes all of the viewer's empathy reserves, without mawkishness.
Framed with humanity - the VO being easily mistaken for that of the new owner - the film's POV style and excellent sound design make the moments of distress all the more visceral.
