Just when you thought game footage couldn't get much better, something else comes along to blow you away.
Such is the case with this new short film, created by Stockholm-based VFX house Important Looking Pirates in collaboration with Electronic Arts Games and DICE.
The nine-minute, fully CG short film, called Exodus, has been launched ahead of the release of the newest Battlefield game, Battlefield 2042. It features a stunning likeness of The Wire actor Michael K Williams, along with his voice acting, and follows the story of his character and the events that trigger an all-out war.
Important Looking Pirates has been involved in the project from the early days of its inception, developing the initial idea into a visual story in collaboration with Kryler Åkerstöm Film, Electronic Arts, and the Dice teams in Stockholm and Los Angeles. From pre-visualisation to final animation and compositing, the Pirates (as the ILP artists call themselves) took inspiration from references provided by Electronic Arts and brought to life a thrilling and action packed short film.
In total, 14,000 frames were produced over seven months by a team of 50, using 560,500 rendering hours to generate water, explosions, soldiers and everything you can expect from a futuristic Battlefield. “This has been an amazing experience and we are honoured to be part of the world building and storytelling of Battlefield 2042," said Niklas Jacobson, Executive Creative Director at Important Looking Pirates. "The creative possibilities when working full CG are super-exciting! Having full control of all aspects of the look and feel of the production is challenging but our artists get to unleash their full imagination and capabilities and it makes the final results extremely rewarding!”
