VR is supposed to be an all-encompassing portal to another world, but it's a tough trick to sell to people who aren't donning unwieldy headsets.

It's smart, therefore, that BBDO New York and Meta decided to instead have the lore-fuelled reality of new RPG, Asgard's Wrath 2, rip through into the real world in exciting and attention-grabbing ways.

The promotional campaign began a couple of weeks before the game's launch, with 'found footage' of mythical creatures on social media and a mysterious portal appearing at an NBA game, followed by a cinematic trailer blending reality and virtual worlds.

The hype escalated at The Game Awards, where a larger portal display, thought by many to be CGI, lit up the Los Angeles skyline; an innovative marketing strategy, with minimal paid advertising, which quickly went viral, amassing over 8 million views and sparking widespread discussions online.
