When oligarchs control the world, the response is to create a strange, chilling, and revelatory video to critique the country and risk your own reputation.

You're Born starts off with a Russian man departing a plane and heading north, into the frozen taiga of Siberia. An orthodox Catholic clergyman has sawed into the ice, cutting out enough space for a cross-shaped pool to appear. When the man falls into the blessed water, he comes out an entirely new man.

The music, strange and modern, pulsating with a low beat that makes the film all the more tense and strange emphasizes the themes of the story. The lighting is also very stark, a foil against the expanse of the country and the strangeness of the world. The narrative here is what’s striking. You're Born is tight and effective and Director Andzej Gavriss takes it all in hand, guiding us through the wicked, strange, and divine story to its terrifying, bitter end.
