Global production company Sweetshop has signed Director Marit Weerheijm for representation in the UK.

A prodigiously talented young filmmaker, Weerheijm has won multiple awards for her short films and built a burgeoning commercial reel in a strikingly short space of time. Weerheijm's work is defined by a level of craft that belies her age and her fascination with human relationships. It is the standard of the performances and images she creates, coupled with a real intimacy of story, that makes her films so incredibly affecting.

Weerheijm studied at the Netherlands Film Academy, and her graduation short film When Grey is a Colour won an Oscar at the prestigious Student Academy Awards, as well as two jury awards at TIFF Kids and the CILECT prize for Best Graduation Film worldwide. Her latest short En Route won Gold at the Dutch Film Festival, premiering at the 70th Berlinale.

Seamlessly transitioning into commercials, Weerheijm has brought her meticulous process and instinctive, emotive storytelling to work for brands including Grolsch, Pink Ribbon, Post NL and more. Little Black Book described her work as “character-driven, naturalistic and organic with loads of room for spontaneity and creativity.”

Morgan Whitlock, Executive Producer, Sweetshop UK & Europe said, “Marit has an astonishing maturity of process for such a young filmmaker. The way in which she approaches casting, performance and the motivation she instills into her camerawork are all so thoughtful and developed.”

Marit said, “I’m very excited to start working in the UK industry because there are some great storytellers and scripts across the North Sea. I admire the work Sweetshop has made - especially their intimate and honest character driven stories, and I’m thrilled to be part of their roster.”

Sweetshop Global CEO & Partner Wilf Sweetland added, “Marit obviously has incredibly strong instincts. Her work across advertising and film is beautifully arresting, powerfully human and narrative driven. She has a long and successful career ahead of her and we are honoured she has chosen to join Sweetshop.”
