An unacceptable 119,500 children will be without a home this winter, many will wake on Christmas Day in temporary accommodation, facing cramped, unsafe, unsavoury conditions, possibly in a one-bed room for a whole family.

Created by London agency Don’t Panic and sensitively directed by Si&Ad through Academy, the film, Brave Face, follows the story of an adorable eight-year old boy, Jayden, as he goes about his day practising a jolly expression whatever misfortunes befall him.

Then, with his smile perfected, we see him arrive with his mother in tiny, mouldy room, which is where they will be spending the festive season.

Talking about the choice of the song When You’re Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You), released by Dean Martin in 1952, directors Si&Ad commented: “Martin’s voice manages to carry both happiness and sadness in equal measure. The recording also has a huge sense of nostalgia that plays perfectly into the Christmas narrative."

The choice of this version is given extra poignancy by the fact that Dean Martin himself died alone on Christmas Day.
