For anyone familiar with Thai advertising, the bizarre chain of events in BBDO Bangkok's new spot for Samsung's WindFree Air Conditioners should be nothing new, but that doesn't make it any the less delightful.
Using the insight that "Grandmas usually don’t like changing their minds and have the final say", the brand introduces Grandma-Fluencer; an octogenarian opinion-heavy matriarch who wants a cool home.
"[The proposition] got us thinking," states Thasorn Boonyanate (Pete), Chief Creative Officer at BBDO Bangkok, "Why not turn the grandmother, who rarely changes her mind, into an influencer with the mission to convince the whole family to change theirs, proving that even the most traditional-minded grandma can roll with the times.".
Filled with cheeky filmic references and a wonderful po-faced performance, nicely handled by Humour House's Pruk Pramted, the film's surreal qality nonetheless conveys a host of features.
"By flipping the script on traditional influencer campaigns," continues Boonyanate, "we're not just cooling rooms; we're warming up to the idea that perhaps, in matters of comfort and cutting-edge tech (plus if grandma knows how to do a backflip out the window), grandma probably knows what's best."
