Apple have chosen some interesting topics and directors for their advertising/tech demo shorts, but few have been as emotive as this wonderfully-told intergenerational drama, created for the Chinese New Year.
Utilising the talents of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Theodore Melfi (through brother, produced as the first major collaboration with RadicalMedia out of their Shanghai office), cinematographer Lawrence Sher and movie star Zhou Xun (one of China's ‘Four Dan’), Daughter tales the tale of a taxi driver's fraught relationship with two important women in her life - her young daughter and distant mother - all shot on the iPhone 11 Pro.
Never letting the showcase of the device's capabilities overshadow the story (although the placement of it in small spaces meant for some arrestingly intimate shots), this sensitive parable is as touching as it is impressive.
