Today is International Women's Day, a date on which brands usually celebrate the achievements of outstanding women.
With the help of SMUGGLER director Fiona Jane Burgess, automotive brand Mercedes has marked the event with a slightly different campaign – one that highlights the ongoing gender bias in science and engineering industries.
Framed within a moving and eloquent narration from a young girl, the film explores the traditional clichés we might associate with stories about ‘inspirational’ women. We’re talking about the ‘firsts’, those who 'made history', and those who ‘stood out from the crowd’.
Burgess puts a thought-provoking twist on this outdated narrative, asking: what if women didn’t have to be the best to make a name for themselves in these male-dominated worlds?
With visually striking cinematography and creative art direction, the film aims to inspire young women whilst unapologetically and defiantly addressing the issues at the heart of the campaign.
