We all love a bit of Mikkelsen, and his brief appearance in Return of the Goat II is both extremely weird and extremely memorable.
YT is known for their epic ad support (I can’t stop thinking about the anime ad they released last year) and Return of the Goat II doesn’t disappoint. Keeping in line with the horror/urban folklore aesthetic, bikers get pulled, one by one, into the seedy underground of the goats taking over the world via a cursed bike film. The world is panicking, but what’s really great about the piece is SHIFT’s ability to create visceral stories of fear and oddity without losing focus.
When the order comes to enact a culling order, it’s Mads Mikkelsen who gets the final handoff. The final moments as he’s standing in the elevator, the camera riveted on his face, is truly bizarre and exceptionally fun, embodying the weirdness that YT wanted with the sequel to the original Return of the Goat.
The piece was directed by Otto Bathurst, who has previously directed television episodes on shows like Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. Production company SMUGGLER helped refine the branded launch film, which clocks in at just about twenty-two minutes.
