Halo, Microsoft's record-breaking FPS franchise, has always been a bit of an anomaly when it comes to videogame marketing, leaning in on the 'heart' of the series over the visceral thrills.
This trend continues with the three super shorts that make up the UNSC Archive Films, tales that throw the spotlight on the humanity and heroism behind the origin of specific pieces of the Master Chief’s armour.
Perhaps most powerful, the first film, Unspoken, is the story of an injured soldier’s message of hope and brotherhood to his fallen comrade’s parents after an attack left him unable to deliver that message with his own voice.
Project Magnes, the second of the three films, unfolds the origin of Master Chief’s newest weapon, The GrappleShot; highlighting a dedicated civilian engineer and her attempts to develop the prototype for a new combat device, as the universe turns to war.
And finally, Lightbringers explores the saga of a brave group of miners who put extraction of an ore critical for the Master Chief’s exoskeleton above their own safety and lives; causing them to be trapped underground and bound together in the face of a terrible fate.
The brainchild of 215 McCann, and brought to life with some fantastic performance and direction by Biscuit Filmworks' Isaiah Seret, the campaign manages to highlight the drama and danger inherent in the lore of the Halo universe without a shot being fired.
