British virtual band Gorillaz have unveiled a hell of a lot of music videos over the years, each painstakingly crafted in 2D or 3D animation and packed with Easter eggs and winding lore.

Their latest is no exception. The entrancing, eight-minute promo for The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God is a fully hand-painted homage to mid-century animation (a surprising tonal shift for a band more commonly associated with dystopian mischief), directed by The Line's Timothy McCourt and Max Taylor under the art direction of Jamie Hewlett.

Realised in thoughtful, hand-rendered detail against whimsical, botanically accurate Indian scenery with a touch of The Jungle Book about it, the bandmates trade their usual chaos for contemplation as they trek towards a mountain and their spiritual awakening, culminating in a captivating trip sequence imagined by artist Jonathan Nkondo.
