Authenticity in filmmaking is something that many brands strive for, but whilst some cases of a relatable voice in the directing chair can be achieved through the industry's journey towards equality, others, in particular disability, are harder to realise.

Kudos, then, to Google for their 2024 Super Bowl spot Javier in Frame, which tells the story of a blind man as he documents his life journey, chose blind filmmaker Adam Morse, repped by Johnny Foreigner and shooting through SMUGGLER, to helm the project.

Having lost his eyesight aged 19, Morse brings an unequalled perspective to the 60-second tale; the creative exercise from Google’s Creative Lab in collaboration with GUT acting as both impressive tech demo for the product's accessibility functions and as a hearfelt story of relatable life-experiences.

"The Super Bowl’s been a powerful platform for Google Pixel because it’s allowed us to initiate a conversation with communities who rely on technology to help make their life easier in some way," explains Daryl Butler, Vice President, Devices and Services Marketing, Google. "With Javier in Frame, we wanted viewers to understand that people who are blind or low vision enjoy taking pictures as much as anyone else.

"Javier’s story is one that anyone can appreciate, human truths like falling in love and starting a family. Google will always innovate with intention and I’m proud that Pixel is the only camera with AI features like Guided Frame that are helping blind and low vision people more easily do the things that they enjoy."

Robert Wong, Vice President of Google Creative Lab adds, “Creatively, our goal with Javier in Frame was to provide an authentic glimpse into how people with low vision experience the world, and how AI features in Pixel’s camera like Guided Frame are helping them easily capture everyday moments just like anyone else. The process of bringing this perspective to life was a first for everyone.

"The collaboration between Google, our partners at GUT, Javier, the blind actor who played the lead, and our blind director Adam Morse was an incredible working experience. When you spend time with people from a different community than yours and get to see things the way they do, it’s enlightening. We’re excited for Super Bowl viewers to see this story that we created together and the promise of AI to empower everyone.
