Montirex packs an emotional punch

This charming film helmed by Black Dog Films director/photographer Antony Crook could easily have ended up on the mawkish side, if the inspirational words between the sporting hero and his grandad Wali Moses had not been so deftly handled. 

As it is, the authenticity of unscripted conversation between undefeated four-weight world champion boxer Stevenson and his ‘PopPop’, along with understated piano music, classy editing and cinematography have resulted in a quietly affecting portrait. 

The intimate film looks beyond championship belts to the family bonds that have defined one of boxing's most accomplished careers. 25 fights, 25 wins, unbeaten. And through it all, the constant support and love of those around him, particularly Wali who first got him into boxing. 

The director commented: "In my research I came across Shakur talking about his brothers and sisters and him saying how he wants to win for them. I decided to record a phone call between Shakur and Wali and have them talk about family and their journey together, then build the edit around the conversation.”

The campaign arrives at a landmark moment in Stevenson's career. Having become a four-division world champion earlier this year, the Olympic silver medallist has also recently signed with Dana White's Zuffa Boxing.
