With a remarkable mixture of mediums, Blinkink director Balázs Simon's latest film manages something that we're rarely lucky enough to see nowadays; a new filmmaking technique that is as technically impressive as it is visually stimulating.
Through a mixture of live action (background visuals), motion capture (for character movement), 3D animation (for the film's construction) and 2D painterly effects (for its visual flair), Light of Day genuinely looks like nothing we've seen before - telling the story of a man traversing the mountains on a life-affirming journey with drama and gravitas.
Complimenting the ODESZA track wonderfully, the story's narrative gives an opportunity for Simon to explore the unique visual style with grandeur; capturing both emotive motion from our protagonist as well as spectacular tableaux from his journey.
"I was fascinated by the idea of this very old character who gets rejuvenated during his struggle to experience something magical," explains the director. "This film is about focusing on the values of life, and not giving in to the pressures we face each day.
"I wanted to harness the immersive qualities of 3D animation, but also make it more painterly than usual. The result is a mixture of hand-painted backgrounds, in-camera effects, motion capture and tens of thousands of algorithmic brush strokes in each frame!"
