Just in case you're not up on your Urban Dictionary, a 'tonk' person is someone with big, hefty muscles. A hench fellow. A juggernaut. A beef chief.
Filling the screen with such lumpen specimens, Bailey Tom Bailey's promo for Nerve, Songer, and D Double E's TONKZ is a playful and deliciously un-macho musing on reps and squats and all that good stuff.
Shot in a single day at the independent TNT Gym in Songer’s hometown of Reading, the Great Guns director gives each performer a distinct character; D Double E's pushy personal trainer taking things a bit too far at the end.
“I’m a natural storyteller and I’ve found comedy to be a mode that can contain my diverse ideas," explains Bailey. "I want to create things that are fun, surreal with a subversive or transgressive edge.
"Aesthetically, I try to create a world and visual language for each project, which I find naturally evolves from the idea. Often my work achieved colour cohesion through removing colour, so I was keen to create a look both dramatic and high contrast while still remaining colourful.
"The colour scheme was dominated by reds in the location already so it was natural to reflect this in the wardrobe.”
