Human rights organisation Article 19, Mexican newspaper Diario La Unión, and Grey México have unveiled this affecting short film, Bullet Machine, as an urgent call for press freedom.

Directed by Andrea Pele and Francisco Paparella through Habitant, the campaign immediately immerses us in a family home under threat by gunfire. After taking her daughters to safety, the mother enters her partner’s office, where we see that each bullet is caused by his keystrokes. When he stops typing, they cease, but when he starts writing, the shooting returns.

Brought to life by impactful performances and a powerful visual metaphor, the campaign reveals how violence against the press is not limited to those who practice journalism: it reaches their families too, who carry the fear and the consequences in silence.
