With off the wall narrative direction and a cinematic point of view, Joe Public United strikes the tone between strange, familiar, and uncanny in They Also Crave It.
Arriving in the middle of the night, the pale-blue, oddly lovable ZeZorc appears to a South African family and immediately gets adopted by the children who have no fear of man, god, nor alien. Something about his strange powers, big eyes, and sharp teeth should have set them off, but apparently, even telepathy is cute these days. It all seems to be going well until a delivery of Chicken Licken pushes ZeZorc to the limit. It’s not world domination this alien is interested in, but hot wings.
With a sense of humor and frequent references to other alien family films, South African director Terence Neale creates the set up for disaster with wonderful sci-fi elements and clever production from Romance Films. The piece is absurd enough to be entertaining, but is totally earnest, at least until the very end.
