Written and helmed by award-winning director Mayumi Yoshida and starring Hollywood actors and activists Tzi Ma and Olivia Cheng, the video’s release coincides with Asian Heritage Month in the US and aims to raise awareness around anti-Asian hate crimes.
Produced by Boldly and Musabi Arts, the story is set at the engagement party of Sarah (Olivia Cheng), where she is celebrating with family, including her sister (Amanda Sum) and friends in a Chinese restaurant.
The gang is in the middle of an epic karaoke when they’re interrupted by racist hecklers. The father, Baba (a touching, understated performance by Tzi Ma), is in a dilemma – keep the peace or stand up to the bullies and defend his family.
His journey means he must consider how his loved ones view him and entails the depiction of some rather fabulous reflections of him in their eyes – including an extravagant Asian 'Elvis' type performer resplendent in feathers.
The song, which was originally written in May 2020, when anti-Asian hate crimes were at a peak, exacerbated by the pandemic, aims to promote change and inclusivity through a hopeful story.
