Penned by 2020 International Booker winner, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, Bella and Lucas tells the story of the author and her childhood girlfriend.
Told through broken dolls and paper-mache dioramas, Bella and Lucas is just the start of a story of love, understanding, and creativity. As Rijneveld explains how she learned about building relationships through game mechanics we learn why she needed to become a digital boy in order to explore her queerness. As she works through grief, the film pans over this small, intimate diorama, giving life to inanimate (and digital) things.
The film was narrated by 2021 Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner, Emma Corrin. It’s promoting the launch of the app, Alexander, where audio-driven creative nonfiction will be available. The piece was directed by Leo Leigh and produced by Somesuch.
