At time of writing, as smoke prevents their helicopters from landing, Californian rescue teams are struggling to reach dozens of hikers trapped by a huge fire at a resort near Fresno.

Named the Creek Fire, it is the largest of the blazes that have rampaged across the State in recent weeks as the region experiences an unprecedented heatwave – a record two million acres of forest have been lost. In 2018, forest fires killed 86 people and devastated communities, the death toll so far stands at seven people. Along with the human devastation, these fires threaten the a wide range of endemic plant and animal species – California is a biodiversity hotspot; one of just 35 on the planet.

The eco-rich forests have evolved over thousands of years, with fire as part of their story. Yet while Native Americans managed the habitats for generations, when Europeans arrived in 1849 their approach was different – along with all the valuable trees felled for timber, much of the wisdom of centuries-old fire practices was lost. Climate change has further accelerated a situation that has now reached critical levels.

With the first episode launching today, The State of California series, directed by Ben Hemmings, explores the fascinating history of California's forests, showcasing the people who are dedicated to preserving the environment and addressing the challenges of these catastrophic wildfires. One Tree Planted has been heavily involved in reforestation efforts across California, as well as Australia and the Amazon Rainforest.
