Created by DDB Paris, helmed by TRAKTOR and produced by Stink, the launch film of Ubisoft game Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is an homage to the opening scene of Trainspotting, which rips apart the humdrum life choices we make as part of the consumer society.
While in the film Irvine Welsh’s deathless prose (adapted for screen by John Hodge) is juxtaposed with scenes of the Trainspotting crew escaping life's drudgery via various chemical means, in this witty, breathtaking spot, we are invited to enter a more heroic world and be transported to Ancient Greece, where Alexios, descendant of the Spartan general Léonidas will have to make smart choices to negotiate the violence, conflict and bad diets of the fifth century BC.
Nicely undercutting the somewhat po-faced pomposity that often accompanies such historical epics, the voiceover bitterly rants on about the futility of choosing fixed rate mortgages, low-cholesterol diets “a fucking big television” etc, when we're all going to end our days slumped in wee-soaked retirement homes amounting to “nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish fucked-up brats we spawned to replace ourselves”. Lolz.
