Created by Joe Public and thoughtfully directed by Zee Ntuli through Darling Films, this impactful film from banking service Nedbank's YouthX platform brings to life a former activist’s memories of the Soweto Uprising.
The Soweto uprising was a series of demonstrations and protests led by Black school children in South Africa during apartheid that began on the morning of 16 June 1976.
Shot on black-and-white Kodak film to accurately represent the photojournalism of the era, Honouring The Class Of ‘76 seamlessly blends monochrome scenes that jump between memories and present day moments in a single location, bringing to life the harrowing events of that fateful day.
It is told from the perspective of Mangaliso Ngcobo, a 63-year-old sign writer and former activist, as he paints the name of a fallen hero on a school honours board. The intense soundscape was created in pre-production to enhance the viewers immersion in the protagonist’s memories, blending music, sound effects, and historical soundbites.
