The crash of the waves, the form of the rider, the solitude of the seas; there's no doubt that the aesthetics of surfing sell.
However, in his wonderfully crafted and anarchically satirical spot for Lost Surfboards, director Win Brooks is choosing another tact; attempting to convince those who aren't familiar with the waves to make way for those that know their A-frame from their wipeout.
Created as an animated scrapbook of ideas, Surfing Sucks throws a host of mixed-mediams at the screen, before finally settling on the sublime solitude of tucking into a well-formed barrel.
Brooks explains his process here: "The animated elements (such as the plane) began as Hi 8 camcorder footage. I then printed individual frames on a Xerox LaserJet, cut them out, photographed and chroma-keyed them, and then assembled the animation on Premiere. I fed the resulting footage through a CRT television and filmed the screen at 4K.
"I also used a sheet magnifier over video playback for some transitions, text and logos. The waving banner began as a paper drawing taped to a fan. The receipt printer was animated in real-time using MS Word and a LONG roll of thermal paper. Screen recordings, surf reports and old movies also make appearances."
