We do not know how old she is, we do not know what her name is or who will take her,” so begins the story of an unknown girl as she is kidnapped from a slum dwelling, imprisoned and eventually sent out as a sex worker.
With atmospheric direction and cinematography by Kabeer Shaik, through 7Films, the PSA Light in the Darkness simply and directly conveys some of the terror of such a girl’s ordeal. With creative by Darren Borrino and Rob Rutherford, it is greatly augmented by discordant horror-movie music composed by Aurélien Rubod.
Shaik comments: "According to the ILO [the UN's international labour organisation], over 40 million people are in modern slavery right now. Young girls are among the most vulnerable, making up an estimated 17 per of total victims. We’re in the dark about who the active traffickers are and where they will strike next. Without more specific information, all we know for sure is that it will continue. This film tells the story of the hypothetical next victim, inevitable unless we can learn more about what is happening in the shadows. Research and investigation are important, but information from the general public could be decisive."
The film ends with a call out to share any information with the A21 campaign, a global NGO that works to fight human trafficking, including sexual exploitation and slavery.
