Despite being possibly the most adapted Christmas story of all time, there's always room for another version of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, and for its festive offering this year, Walmart has returned it to its most gloriously anarchic adaptors: The Muppets.
Created by Dept W and Pub W, Publicis Groupe's dedicated Walmart agency teams bringing together Fallon, Leo New York, the community, Digitas and Zenith, A Who Knew Carol reunites Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and Rizzo for a new take on the 1992 film's opening musical number, Scrooge.
Aside from bringing in newer Muppet regulars like Pepé the King Prawn, the most exciting bit of updating comes in the form of Scrooge himself, previously essayed by Michael Caine in the original [a role for which he should have won an Oscar], and now filled by everyone's favourite snarling cowboy, Walton Goggins.
Endearingly recreating the movie's opening musical sequence, Radical Media director Randall Einhorn revels in the practical sets and background puppetry, floating the camera through the street from character to character.
Marking only the first in a series of films, with Scrooge set to encounter the Ghost of Christmas Presents, the Ghost of Deals to Come and the Ghost of Christmas Fast, alongside Spanish-language spots featuring Stephanie Beatriz as Scrooge's niece, this seasonal treat is no humbug.
