Taking cues from Afrofuturistic stylings and more than a dab of Spielberg's Ready Player One, Sam Coleman's visually impressive new film for Volkswagen revs the engine on the journey from A to B.

Augmenting the streets of Johannesburg, Game On is a creative concept from Ogilvy South Africa that showcases the VW’s I.Q. Drive tech, allowing our protagonist to navigate the streets with ease whilst her competitors struggle in their oversized behemoths.

"What excited me," comments the Patriot Films director, "was the opportunity to create a Johannesburg that hasn’t been seen before, but I didn’t want to lose what Joburg is all about. So, every single shot was first captured live in camera before the CG and animation teams went to work. 

"It was about layering this futuristic video game world over Jozi’s existing bones so that people would recognise the characters, landmarks and places. People love this city!"

As well as being stylistically impressive, the team added another layer to the visuals that presented a unique challenge: embedding world-first bespoke NFTs into the commercial for viewers to find. MetaLabsAfrica created a range of unique tokens and for five days Polo fans could scour the ad to find, collect or trade on the popular NFT trading platform OpenSea. VW shared clues on their social channels, making the ad not only watchable but playable.
