Using the baccalaureate exam - which represents teenagers’ transition to adulthood - as a parallel, #UnExaminable draws attention to another examination: the outdated and harrowing ‘virginity test’ to which many young girls from Romania may be subjected.
The World Health Organization (WHO) have declared that not only is the archaic ‘test’ a violation of human rights, it has no proven scientific value whatsoever. Yet some parents in Romania - like the parents of the terrified child in this film - still insist on making their teenage daughters undergo the procedure to ensure they’re ‘fit for marriage’.
This film, created by DDB Bucharest through Abis Studio, is not easy viewing, but its content is sure come as a genuine shock to many who didn’t realise this practice still takes place.
