With 80 percent of all suicides being men and 49 per cent of men feeling more depressed than they’ll admit to, the taboo around male mental health needs breaking.

Having suffered from anxiety and self-doubt for many years, commercial filmmaker Adams embarked on a chillingly impressive feat in order to inspire men to feel confident in sharing their own inner turmoil.

Produced by Story Real Studios, his spectacular self-directed film Into The Dark Blue sees him take a dip under an iceberg in Greenland wearing only a pair of Sheath Underwear – no oxygen tank, no mask and no wetsuit –  into some of the coldest water on Earth, at -28°F.

During the first few months of the pandemic, business worries and isolation caused Adams to plunge into something much worse than freezing sea. "I sunk into the darkest 12-month period of my life," he recalls. He wanted to do something to inspire debate around men's inner struggles.

He explains: "You may be wondering ‘What do icebergs have to do with mental health?’. The idea came from a dream that I had where I was deep underwater holding up the weight of a glacier in my hands and feeling totally calm and at peace (something I rarely felt in my life on land). Our hope for this film is to serve as a powerful visual metaphor on the invisible battles that many of us hide."

"My message to others is to realise just how much goes on below the surface. A man may appear strong, calm and collected but be struggling to stay afloat on the inside. You’re stronger than you think and by embracing adversity, you can accomplish anything."
