It’s a shameful fact that the challenges humanity faces – war, environmental ruin, the refugee crisis, and arguably the pandemic – are largely brought about by failures in the adult world.
The omnishambles we have created impacts vulnerable young people – yet they are our future, if we can save them, we can hope for a better world.
Created by B-Reel and directed by … this impactful film for Save the Children Sweden is part of the Here and Now. For the Future campaign and is set to an excerpt of Alfred Lloyd Tennyson’s classic New Year’s poem, In Memoriam A.H.H., read by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.
Thunberg represents much of what the NGO stands for – the elevation of young voices to bring about change and a belief in the power of children. She has a compelling voice, packed with emotion and conviction, yet controlled and determined.
As she recites the poem imploring us to “ring in the new, and ring out the old, ring out the thousand wars of old”, the film depicts some of the dire situations that children across the world are facing – from physical and emotional abuse to the traumas of conflict.
Along with the use of news footage, there is some unusual, heartbreaking imagery – a child flinches as a bomb rocks the car she’s in; instead of the usual pyrotechnics, the explosion is visualised as a bird falling from the sky, highlighting the collateral damage that innocents suffer in the wake of the world’s horrors.
Johan Dahlqvist, B-Reel’s Group ECD comments: “I look at my daughter and see a power-pack of unlimited possibilities. It’s as true for her as with Greta and every other child. If the world would take advantage of every child's potential for positive change, I think we can look forward to an incredible world.”
