Director/DP Michael Rowles Joins MacGuffin Films

Go Blue: Director Michael Rowles has signed with MacGuffin Films.

New York-based production company MacGuffin Films has signed Director/DP Michael Rowles to its roster.  The move reunites Rowles with Head of Sales/Executive Producer Chris Messiter, with whom he shared several roosts including Smillie Films and Straw Dogs. He was most recently with The Artists Company.

Michael is the third generation of a film industry family, his grandfather having worked at 20th Century Fox in the early 1930s.  While attending film school at The University of Michigan, Rowles won the coveted Student Academy Award.  He soon moved to Los Angeles and began working on music videos and commercials as a First Assistant Director, working closely with such legendary directors as David Fincher, Daniel Kleinman and Peter Smillie.

He made the move to directing in the early 90's.  His style of visual storytelling has showcased spots for American Express, Chevrolet, Time Warner and numerous others.  His Super Bowl spot for Dove, "Real Beauty/Self Esteem," featuring a series of poignant portraits of young girls against the Cyndi Lauper track "True Colors," examined the role of feminine self-image in American culture and became a touch point for discussions of how to raise healthy self esteem in young girls.

Rowles has shot projects in over 20 different countries, and won numerous industry accolades for his work through the years including Lions, Clios, Bessies, and the British Advertising Golden Arrow.

The move to MacGuffin reunites Rowles with long time collaborator Chris Messiter and a diverse roster of talent. "While MacGuffin was solidly built around tabletop, they're expanding their live action roster," Rowles say about his joining.  "They're a solid company that's been around for almost 30 years. More importantly, they have the resources to support my creative growth in many ways, and many of the people at the company have been there for two decades or longer.  Stability is important, and the way MacGuffin operates rings true with me."
