Pictures In a Row Signs Director Peter Lydon

Director Peter Lydon brings his flair for comedy and drama to Picrow in L.A.

Commercial production studio Picrow has signed British director Peter Lydon to its roster. Known for his visual style and comedic sensibility, Lydon began his career directing documentaries. His BAFTA-nominated biography of Peter Sellers, "Peter Sellers… As He Filmed It," won three major awards in the US.

Moving from documentaries into TV, Lydon quickly gained recognition for both comedy and dramatic work, directing multiple episodes of the hit British series, "Shameless," "Teachers," "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" and "Vincent." In 2010, he won a Royal Television Society History Award for his four-part period drama "Garrow's Law." In the same year, "Uncle Santa", a Sky 1 short directed by Lydon, aired on Christmas Day and was the first 3D TV drama comedy ever commissioned in the UK. He directs through 76 Ltd. in London.

Lydon's recent Carlsberg campaign, "The Crate Escape," was recently featured in SourceEcreative (click here). The spot, which has been wildly popular, is a parody of the World War II drama "The Great Escape."

His hugely successful Fairytale campaign for British Sky Broadband merged the demand for technology with iconic legends such as Aladdin, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Princess and the Pea and The Frog Prince. Other commercial clients include IKEA, Discovery Channel, and the Orange/Unicef campaign starring Ewan McGregor.

"Peter's work has an utterly distinctive quality, and it's an ideal time for him to expand into the US," says Picrow Executive Producer Roger Hunt. "His experience with actors in long form has clearly rubbed off on his commercial spots, which have already caught the attention of agencies worldwide. Peter is a unique talent, and we're looking forward to working with him."

"I'm very excited about joining Picrow," says Lydon. "It's a thriving creative community with a collective approach that inspires me. Working in the US excites me on a number of levels. There is a quality of work I feel chimes with what I do, combined with a style of humor that really resonates with me."

Lydon describes his approach to working in film, television or commercials as always the same: "To uncover and understand the central idea of a script and to make sure that comes through loud and clear," he explains.  "One of my strengths is the ability to take a script and look at it from a number of different angles on the road to unlocking its potential. Ultimately, I am a filmmaker driven by the desire to create work that connects with people and entertains them."
