One Track Mind: Molly Salas
Molly Salas, Music Supervisor at Facebook, takes Deee-Lite in a certain dance floor filler, and bangs the drum for an unsung J.Lo track as she reveals her Isolation Radio Station playlist.
What's the song you've listened to most during this isolation period?
It’s a silly tie. The good answer is Safaera by Bad Bunny (despite its unceremonious removal from Spotify recently) because it’s a certified bop, amazing for spontaneous dance parties which are welcome right now, and it goes a bazillion places in five short minutes. The real answer (with number of listens, at least), is George Michael's Careless Whisper because my partner and I are learning to play it on melodica and guitar, respectively, to pass the time in quarantine. No shame.
What track always gets you on the dance floor?
Groove Is In The Heart by Deee-Lite. How can you not dance when that song comes on? It reminds me of summers in New York where the sun goes down at 9pm and of dance parties during Pride.
What's your 'guilty pleasure' track?
Let’s Get Loud by Jennifer Lopez [below], in a definitely-not-that-guilty-about-it way. My uncle used to own a dance studio in LA (classes by weekday, salsa club by weeknight), and I grew up surrounded by competitive ballroom. This song pays homage to that, but is also just a catchy as hell pop song. It has the Estefans written all over it, and it’s an unsung hero of J.Lo’s catalogue. I have a screenshot of an exchange between my friend and her brother where he asks her, “what’s that jlo song molly likes?” and her response without skipping a beat is “let’s get loud lol”. It’s not what everyone thinks of when they think of J.Lo, but I love it nonetheless.
What song always makes you turn off the stereo when it comes on?
It’s been a minute since this has been an issue, but 100% Right Round by Flo Rida, because of radio fatigue c. 2009, how it invokes memories of bad dances in high school gyms, and how they did Dead Or Alive dirty with that sample. As soon as I read this question this visceral memory came to mind of driving around San Diego in my 1998 Ford Taurus with a cassette-to-aux converter that sometimes broke, turning on the Top 40 station at the time, hearing Right Round and turning it RIGHT OFF, every time.
There are others, sure, but this one takes the cake.
We can't really go out right now, but when we're finally allowed to head out for a night on the town, what track will you listen to while you're getting ready?
Roll (Burbank Funk) by The Internet [above]. This song is just so funky, and The Internet are up there on my all time favorites list. I put it on whenever I want to feel in a good mood and it never fails. When that album’s done, I’ll probably turn on HOMECOMING: The Live Album.
