On My Radar: Oskar Wrango
Oskar Wrango, director at Emerald Pictures, celebrates the uniqueness of Lionel Goldstein and the poetic quality of a 13-year-old film as he tells us what's on his creative radar.
What the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
Lionel Goldstein's latest spot called Dick, for Equal Pay Day. It’s completely crazy, weird and very bold. I’m a fan of Lionel Goldstein’s work; they’re so unique. They’ve done several political spots that have weird humour while still having great seriousness and depth. It’s extremely far from what I do, but I think that’s why I love it so much.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?
Boringquestion-dot-com. Just kidding, it’s only a boring question because I have no fun answer, but 1.4 is a great website.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
AI-generated 3D-printed headphones, made out of wood... I wish! No, it was AirPods.
What product could you not live without?
Diapers. As a dad of three, they are extremely necessary. Hopefully, not for too much longer – fingers crossed!
What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. It’s 13-years-old, but it’s the best film I’ve seen all year. I always find myself coming back to it. It’s super-super-special and poetic.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
The Holy Mountain, by Jodorowsky. Because it’s uncompromising, unique and beautiful. I have no idea how they managed to pull this off.
What’s your preferred social media platform?
Instagram, because I am 40+ and a director.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Married at First Sight, Swedish edition. It’s extremely entertaining. I’ve seen many versions of Married at First Sight, and the Swedish version is still the best.
What’s your favourite podcast?
Team Deakins. They have the best people in film on the show; great directors and DPs.
What show/exhibition has most inspired you recently?
Unfortunately, I haven’t been to a show/exhibition recently (Covid, three kids). But I’m always inspired by the amazing work of the Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda. He’s an artist and musician, and I’ve been to both his exhibits and live shows. He is a minimalistic genius.
If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
Nils Frahm; he develops organically and is constantly brilliant and simple.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
Start paying directors for pitches, you bastards!
Who or what has most influenced your career?
Chris Cunningham. Because he made films in a new way back when I was young and hungry.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know.
I am a great juggler. It’s actually the reason I started to make films.
