Helmed by Black Dog Films’ director Tom Dream, and created with London agency Pals, the film Creating Cultural Belonging, is an inspiring story of two women’s mission to affect systemic change in a region of Kent that was once a UKIP stronghold.
Commissioned by Power to Change, an independent trust supporting community businesses in England, the film follows the story of People Dem Collective founders Kelly Abbott and Victoria Williams as they set about creating their organisation.
Starting life in Abbott’s living room, the group has grown exponentially since 2019, gaining momentum since the murder of George Floyd sparked growing support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
The film features affecting footage of the Margate BLM march Margate to Minneapolis, which took place in June 2020 and attracted a crowd of 4000 peaceful protesters.
People Dem Collective is currently delivering education sessions, workshops, cultural events and mentorship for young people from minoritised ethnicity communities and is also working to take over a five-story building on Margate’s seafront to create a National Cultural Centre, while working in partnership with Dreamland Margate to turn a disused building into an inclusive space.
