“I know that there will come a time when I will still be there, but there will hardly be anything left of me. It's that version of myself that I have to fight every day.”
These poignant words from the subject of this film, Paul, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer at 65, highlight the cruelty of Alzheimer’s and the horrible fear of losing one’s mind.
Created by Mortierbrigade and directed by Joost Vandebrug through CZAR Brussels, the film is titled A Strenuous Fight and raises awareness of the disease by focusing on the often unseen battle a victim wages against his own mind by placing him in a boxing ring.
Paul’s bravery shines through the sadness, “I lose heart and don't take the best care of myself,” he says, “I may wake up tomorrow as the Paul I don't want to be.”
