Let Bentley provide Comfort Outside Your Comfort Zone
New spot co-directed by Ben Brand and Quentin Baillieux
When making this co-directed commercial, Eddy's Ben Brand and Quentin Baillieux used an assembly of techniques that ultimately lead to creating this incredibly touching mixed media film.
The live action filming took place in Spain, to take advantage of the warm atmosphere.
When filming, Brand really focused on giving the actors, particularly Lucy, the young girl “freedom to be in the moment and forget everything around her”. As he put it, the car’s character “has the mission to calm and soothe Lucy, to take her on a journey the most comfortable possible”.
On set, Brand and Baillieux worked on optimising the transitions, including the pivotal scene of the reflection in the window. Managing the lighting, colorimetry, and acting was not a simple task, but through this impeccable co-direction, the film is as it should be, fluid without any breaks.

In the pre-production phase of animation, Quentin Baillieux mocked up the different designs with the help of his animation team. The construction of the sets was a meticulous assignment, needing to have a dreamlike atmosphere, of incomparable escape. The unique and graphic style of Baillieux allowed him to tell this story with more sensibility, and for that a special team was chosen to meet the requirements of the project.
From the moment this film opens, the quintessential Bentley spirit is there with us, the comfort outside of your comfort zone. Shooting this was an incredible opportunity to push the limits on a car commercial, and step outside of our own comfort zones.
When imagining the story, the first person we needed to focus on was Lucy. She is a young girl, leaving everything behind to go on a trip without her parents for the first time. This crucial moment in her life was our story, and our challenge was to film this moment as realistic as possible.
This film focuses on this family intimacy, those little signs that show affection that we all have with our loved ones, and what is beautiful in our film is that the car plays a part in all of that. It is an integral part of their family, it takes part in their values, and in a way, part of their lives.
With Bentley, we had the freedom to do something very narrative with a female character, almost a short film
Wanting to keep this same intimate feeling, we tried to film the car in the most emotional yet subtle way. The various features of the Bentayga are present in the film, but don’t overwhelm young Lucy as she makes this journey. The individual stays the center of what we do, because that is what makes Bentley, Bentley.
The moment when the mother begins her story is when the subtle harmony of Ben Brand and Quentin Baillieux’s collaboration comes to life, offering all of its strength from the get go. To achieve this transition into Lucy’s imaginary world, Ben and Quentin worked hand in hand, to the point of perfectly synchronizing their artistic direction and making the junction of the different techniques disappear entirely.
As the story proceeds, we see how it transforms Lucy into the more mature girl she is at the end. The Bentayga accompanies Lucy as she travels through incredible landscapes, becoming more aware of the achievements she too can reach.
In the global version, Lucy encounters Nellie Bly, the first woman reporter and adventurer. She was a pioneer in women’s journalism. In the Chinese version, we discover Diana Barnato Walker. She was the first British woman to break the sound barrier and flew warplanes during the World War II.
