The newest video from Khruangbin’s single Dearest Alfred is a mashup ode to letter writing and storytelling.

The piece, originally inspired by a trove of letters bassist Laura Lee Ochoa’s grandfather wrote to his twin brother, sits in between the things left blurred and unsaid, cut out from letters, erased from text messages, and kept out of the conversation.

Inspired by the remix and the act of taking and retaking samples, songs, and sounds, The Kennedys, Wieden+Kennedy’s annual mentorship program, created a monochrome version and then used animation overlays and footage layering to create a new piece.

Although The Kennedys went virtual this year, their commitment to retaining at least 80% BAME mentees has remained strong. With multiple program hires working currently at Wieden and Kennedy, the new ten-week course proves its worth not just to the mentees, but to W+K itself.

It was all filmed, animated, and edited from the homes of eight participants in the internship scheme. Former Kennedys Sammy Watts-Stanfield helped with production and Sof Vujanic offered some pick-up shots.

“In a year where communication has a new spin of importance and focus has been put on the postal service, we wanted to make a video highlighting that sentiment for a song based on letters my grandfather sent to his brother,” says Khruangbin’s Laura Lee Ochoa. “Working with The Kennedys, we were able to highlight these feelings from a variety of perspectives and through a variety of mediums--which felt important to the project.
