Before watching this terrific music video, it might be worth cribbing up on your California symbolism, West Coast hip hop and all things Black culture.

For the promo of Kendrick Lamar's follow-up to diss track Not Like Us, squabble up, Kendrick Lamar has created a grab-bag of references and homages that not only display his hometown pride, but also sit with political relevance next to the lyrical content.

Most notably borrowing its visual style from The Roots' The Next Movement music video from Charles Stone III, this PRETTYBIRD-produced, Calmatic-directed onslaught features, amongst others, cues including the African-American Flag, the Black Panther Party, the Compton Christmas Parade, the late rappers Nate Dogg and Mac Dre, the TV show Soul Train, and the film Menace II Society.
