We don't know if you're that au fait with the average videogame preview at events like Summer Game Fest, but they tend to follow a similar pattern: a fast-paced montage of clips, followed by endless trailers introduced by wooden developers.
No so for Devolver Digital, who, for their latest showcase, enlisted the talents of BLINKINK's Joe Pelling to create a comedically creepy narrative about an obsessive fan, acting as a through-line for the string of promos.
Leaning into the amusing-unsettlement he perfected with the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared series (created in collaboartion with Becky Sloan), Volvy's 15th Birthday Party sees the return of the fictitious mascot; the story delving into the overactive imagination of a mild-mannered superfan named Mathew.
Inspired, wonderfully crafted, and shot-through with an anarchic spirit, this intriguing oddity is the perfect pairing of brand and director.
