With the only requirements from Sony Music UK being to “show a jailbreak”, and “weave in a train heist”, director Nicholas Lam turned to his love of anime to bring this compelling, cyberpunk landscape to life for British rappers J Hus and CB’s latest track, Cream, through Hound and Point Five Creations.
Influenced by Japanese animation titles such as Cowboy Bebop, Demon Hunter, Afro-Samurai, Batman Ninja and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the promo is set in a gritty, neo-feudal world, in which the invincible rappers find themselves at the centre of endless samurai-style battles with cyborg cowboy opponents.
From striking cityscapes bathed in perpetual sunset or moonlight, to a subtle yet imperative use of anime-style SFX, Lam pours exquisite attention to detail into every single shot, resulting in dynamic and visually-captivating story that not only compliments, but adds an enchanting new dimension to Cream's distinctive sound.
