The extreme events that could be caused by the climate crisis are brought to devastating, digital life in this impressive and impactful new campaign from Greenpeace Brasil.
Utilising 'the most famous city in the gaming universe' Los Santos, from Rockstar's GTA5, VMLY&R have created a modded map that simulates environmental, social and economic changes, as well as providing exclusive missions with a socio-environmental focus.
Cleverly hijacking the realism and mimicry of Los Angeles the game's environment is famous for, Los Santos +3ºC models extreme events, such as flooded areas, dry reservoirs, air pollution and a drastic decrease in fauna and flora, in a way that is both easy to conceive and difficult to forget.
“The first step in engaging people is to make them understand the problem," comments Rafael Pitanguy, CCO of VMLY&R. "Los Santos +3ºC will allow the player to experience what is already happening in different parts of the world, but which, many times, is still not directly related to the climate crisis.
"We hope that the relationship between these two themes will gain strength with the game”
“We cannot forget that it is the role of States to create adaptation measures and develop structural actions to face the climate crisis," adds Rodrigo Jesus, spokesman for Greenpeace Brazil, "and we need to pressure them to fulfill their role.
"With this GTA version, we want to make young people aware that it is in a world like this that we will live if our rulers don't take the necessary measures urgently.".
